Sasha Bell, the woman who filed the first lawsuit over water contamination in Flint, Michigan was shot to death in her home last week. One suspect has been in custody, but no charges was filed yet.
Sasha Avonna Bell, a 19-year-old Flint resident, was one of the first residents who filed a lawsuit related to water crisis in Flint. BET reported that she was idenfitied as a victim of a shooting that took place earlier this week.
She was known to file the lawsuit stating that her 1-year-old son suffered from lead poisoning from contaminated water in Flint. In her lawsuit, she alleged six companies along with three government employees for causing the water crisis by not taking necessary measures to ensure safe drinking water. Last week she was found shot to dead in her house.
MLive reported that Bell was found dead on Tuesday, April 19 at 2600 block of Ridgecrest Drive at the Ridgecrest Village Townhouses. Her friend, Sacorya Renee Reed, was also found shot to death in the home. Her son was found unharmed inside the house and was taken to into custody by child protective services.
Poice has taken one suspect into custody but no charges have been reported. While her attorney, Corey M. Stern, described her Bell as a lovely young women who cared deeply for her family.
"Her tragic and senseless death has created a void in the lives of so many people that loved her. Hopefully her child will be lifted up by the love and support from everyone who cared deeply for Sasha," said Mr. Stern who handled 64 of lawsuit representing 144 children who claimed to be effected by contaminated water in Flint.
Corey Stern, a New York-based lawyer told New York Daily News the case will continue despite of the Sasha Bell's tragic death. "It's really her son's case," said the counsellor from Levy Konigsberg, LLP. Two days before the incident, a Flint Water Plant foreman, Matthew McFarland, was also found dead in his Michigan home, but the cause of death is still unknown.
Flint water cisis began when City of Flint switched the source of water supply to Flint River. However, residents claim the city administration did not provide sufficient sufficient corrosion control. Therefore, lead from old plumbing contaminated the drinking water, which was reported to be higher than national standard.
