George Zimmerman, the 30-year-old former neighborhood watchman, acquitted in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, was arrested after deputies in Florida responded to a disturbance call in Orlando on Monday, authorities said, as reported by The Associated Press.
Zimmerman was booked into jail at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday, according to a Seminole County Sheriff's Office statement. Authorities provided few details, as it was not immediately known what charge he faced, The AP reported.
"Zimmerman's new girlfriend, 27-year-old Samantha Scheibe, lives in the 1300 block of Topfield Court, according to an unrelated Lake Mary police report," Orlando Sentinel reported.
"Just when you thought you heard the last of George Zimmerman... I'm in an absolute shock. He was never outside. It's not like he was out flaunting around," said neighbor Catherine Cantrell.
"She said she had twice seen a man who looked like Zimmerman get out of a truck that's been in the driveway for nearly a month. The truck parked there Monday appeared to be the same one that reporters have seen Zimmerman drive previously," The AP also reported.
Zimmerman was acquitted in July of all charges in the shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager. The court verdict unleashed a nationwide debate about the role of race, and the self-defense law in Florida.
Since the acquittal, Zimmerman has been in the news. Shellie Zimmerman, his estranged wife, told authorities that he
"Presumably Zimmerman will appear before Seminole County Judge Fred Schott tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in Sanford and learn more about the case against him and whether he will remain locked up," Orlando Sentinel also reported.
