Jessica Dever-Jakusz, a former Tempe Arizona police detective, has been accused of an adulterous affair with a drug dealer she had been investigating undercover, which also put two other officers at risk, The New York Daily News reported.
The married Dever-Jakusz let slip to the suspect that she and two others were investigating him, destroying about five months of work in the case, news reports said. A 13-year veteran of the Tempe police force whose husband also works in law enforcement, Dever-Jakusz did not speak with investigators early this week, and resigned from the unit. The case had been referred for possible criminal prosecution, The Associated Press reported.
Dever-Jakusz could face two counts of hindering prosecution, news reports said. The police detective and suspect were sleeping together on a regular basis at the suspect's home, a criminal report revealed.
Investigators said by October 15, Dever-Jakusz told the suspect for the first time he was being investigated by authorities.
The suspect soon began talking to Tempe investigators about the affair. Dever-Jakusz also told him he and his associates were targets of the drug probe. The suspect showed investigators sexually explicit text messages the two shared as evidence of the affair, according to news reports.
Tempe police officials referred the results of the criminal investigation to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, which is reviewing the material, the AP reported.
The undercover case "focused on sale of the party drug known as Molly on the Mill Avenue strip in Tempe," The New York Daily News also reported.
