The prominent case in 2010 involving former the son of former Assembly speaker Fabian Nunez, convicted Esteban Nunez, has finally come to an end. Esteban is confirmed to be free from his 16-year-sentence known to have been reduced to 7 years after former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger commuted his sentence on his last day in office.
However, the prison sentence might end for Esteban but for the family of victim Luis Santos, a college student in San Diego, the agony continues. The Associated Press revealed that after last week's release announcement, 27-year-old convict of manslaughter, Esteban, has been freed from the Sacramento County and is now under parole supervision for three years.
The news report refreshes the widely talked about case in 2010, especially when former Gov. Schwarzenegger commuted Nunez's supposed 16-year-sentence to 7 years, as he pays his respects to the former Assembly speaker, Fabian.
The tragic encounter at a 2008 fight on the San Diego State University campus involving armed Nunez and others ended up with the unarmed Santos' death. This saddened his family but even more because of the belief that the decision regarding the manslaughter case convicting Nunez was politically motivated, the Los Angeles Times reports.
"It makes you sick that something like this can happen, and you have no power," Kathy Santos, the mother of the late 22-year-old college student said last week, as per the news agency. The issue which has been in headlines seven years ago involved the famous statement made by Schwarzenegger himself saying "Of course you help a friend," he was previously quoted as per the publication defending the commutation.
Even the father of convict Nunez admitted that he used his political ties to have the sentence of his son reduced. "I used my relationship with the governor to help my own son," Fabian said as per the news outlet. "I'd do it again. Any father would do the same," he added.
Meanwhile, the family of Nunez released a statement asking for privacy in light of the recent release. "We continue to grieve over the losses related to our son's involvement in this tragic incident and pray daily for God's healing grace. Our son has paid his debt to society and will continue to meet all legal and financial obligations to the victim's family as agreed. He is committed to continuing the work of healing, self-reflection and spiritual growth. We respectfully request our privacy at this time," the Nunez family said in a statement, as per the news agency.
