The United States Capitol was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a woman tried to ram a car into the White House gate, and was then chased by Secret Service, exchanging shots with police, NBC News reported.

The suspect, who sources said had a child in the car, was shot and killed. At least one Capitol Police officer was also injured during the pursuit.

"This appears to be an isolated incident," said Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine.

Two officials told The Washington Post that the woman's black vehicle struck a security post at the White House entrance near 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW before being chased to 2nd Street and Constitution Avenue, where the pursuit ended with gunfire.

"At first I thought the driver was trying to get out out of the way of police but then I realized she was being chased. Gunshots ensued followed by "lots of screaming and shouting," he said.

"They were swerving all over the place," he added.

The lockdown was lifted at the Capitol 40 minutes after lockdown was lifted The Washington Post also reported. "Shelter in Place has been lifted. You may exit shelter locations & resume normal activities. Thanks for your cooperation," The Senate Sergeant Arms tweeted.

The White House also was briefly locked down after the incident at Capitol Hill, the Associated Press reported, adding that the Secret Service said the procedures were precautionary.
