American retired woman soccer player, Abby Wambach, was arrested in Oregon for drunk driving early Sunday. The retired Olympic athlete later on apologized on social media shortly after the incident.
Portland police charged the retired two-time Olympic gold medalist soccer player, Wambach with driving under the influence of alcohol, Reuters reported. According to the authorities, Wambach was stopped after she reportedly continued to drive her 2014 Range Rover vehicle despite the red light sign.
Wambach also took a sobriety test, however, she failed and was booked to Multnomah County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, alcohol. She was later on released on her own recognizance.
Shortly after her release, she took to her Facebook account and wrote an apology to the public. "I have let myself and others down. I take full responsibility for my actions. I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example," she wrote as quoted by UPI.
Police stated that Wambach was "polite and cooperative throughout the investigation," NJ True Jersey reported. The leading career scorer, male or female, in international soccer, Wambach announced her retirement in October, ending her 15-year carreer.
The 35 year old former Olympics and professional and World Cup player scored more goals in international competition than any other soccer player in history. She and her team won their third World Cup title and first since 1999 with a 5-2 victory over Japan.
Having played in four women's World Cup tournaments, Wambach played in two Olympics winning gold medals in 2004 in Athens, and 2012 in London. She missed the 2008 Olympics with a broken leg.
On Sunday evening, officials with the car company Mini which debuted an ad featuring Wambach and other celebrities during the Super Bowl are "re-evaluating" the company's relationship with her and pulling ads featuring Wambach. Company officials did not make a comment regarding the incident.
