Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp is working with forensics experts as he prepares for his murder trial which is due to start in March, Reuters repored.

If convicted, the 26-year-old could face life in prison.

"It is standard practice to work with specialists from various fields in preparing for a trial," spokesman Annaliese Burgess said.

While Pistorius admitted shooting his girlfriend in the early morning on Valentine's Day, he said it was because he mistook her for a robber, calling it a terrible accident. Steenkamp was shot in the head, hip and arm, and died while still in his house.

Contradicting Pistorius's claim that the shooting was accidental, it was reveale a few days after the shooting that police had been called to his residence two hours before the shooting because neighbors complained of hearing a loud argument.

South African media reported that he shot her four times through a bathroom door. Police said investigators recovered a 9mm pistol from his home.

"Some of the State witnesses heard a woman scream, followed by moments of silence, then heard gunshots," an August indictment read. "The deceased had locked herself into the toilet cubicle, situated adjacent to the main bedroom. The accused armed himself with his 9mm pistol and through the locked door, fired four shots at the deceased."

Prosecutors have said that Pistorius should be charged with first degree murder.

The paralympian had been one of the most celebrated athletes in the world, even serving as an inspiration to many, as he was born with fibulas and both his legs were amputated below the knees.

The trial, due to begin on March 3 will run until March 23, Reuters reported.
