Mission Impossible 6: Jeremy Renner's return likely; Sequel to possibly get new tone, says director

By

Other than Tom Cruise who will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt for Mission Impossible 6, his Rogue Nation co-star Jeremy Renner could join again for the third time in the series. Speculations about his return started after controversial Twitter exchange between the actor and director Christopher McQuarrie.

As reported by Cinema Blend, Renner started the conversation wherein he tagged McQuarrie hinting his possible return.

"Hey, is the band getting back together? Should I start stretching? @chrismcquarrie", Renner wrote to which McQuarrie replied without giving away much detail.

"Wear comfortable pants. You're gonna need 'em. https://twitter.com/renner4real/status/712097148414726144 ...", McQuarrie responded.

If Renner returns for the franchise's sixth film, it will be his third time starring as William Brandt after Ghost Protocol and last year's Rogue Nation. McQuarrie is also set to return as director for the sixth film which is a first for the franchise that has been switching directors from the first to the fifth film. Rebecca Ferguson was also confirmed to return to reprise her role as Ilsa Faust who had been teasing a romantic arc with Hunt in the previous film.

Although he is set to return to the director's chair, McQuarrie previously promised that he will make sure for the next film to be different from the previous installment. According to /Film, McQuarrie stated that he aims to be better in every film and failing to do so for Mission Impossible 6 would be a disappointment for him.

McQuarrie also said that he will aim to do more of the film for less, the lesson he learned after Rogue Nation. "I think the biggest thing I learned is you don't always need as much as you think you do. The motorcycle sequence was originally so much bigger, so much longer, and so much more involved. There were so many action sequences in the movie. You can make a bigger movie with less, and I'm determined to do something leaner, less heavily reliant on plot, and a little stripped down.", he said.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation was a massive worldwide hit $56 million during its opening weekend. It also earned $135 million in China, and nabbed the 13th spot in Deadline's 2015 Most Valuable Movie Blockbuster Tournament. It earned $682.3 million worldwide.

Plot and release date details for Mission Impossible 6 are still under wraps but more information about the project will be reported as they are released in the coming months. It is set to be directed and written by Christopher McQuarrie.
