A North Carolina man was arrested this week after police discovered that he had an outstanding warrant from 2002 for not returning a VHS movie rental. The concord man must now appear in court on a class 3 misdemeanor indictment.
According to Los Angeles Times, A North Carolina native James Meyers claimed that he was just driving his daughter to school on Tuesday when a police officer pulled him over for a defective tail light. He said that the police officer told him that there was an outstanding warrant out for his arrest from 2002.
Meyers allegedly had rented the movie "Freddy Got Fingered," which stars Tom Green and he never returned it from the store. WSOCTV claimed that the rental store in Salisbury, J & J's Video has since closed. However, Meyers has still been given a warrant for failing to return the gross-out comedy movie.
The North Carolina resident also stated that the police officer ran his license and around 25 minutes later asked him to step out of the vehicle. "The officer said, I don't know how to tell you this but there's a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie "Freddy Got Fingered" and never returned it. I thought he was joking," stated Meyers.
The Concord police department, moreover, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday. The police department noted that the warrant was issue on February 28, 2002 by the now closed video store and it was signed by a magistrate.
Meyers mentioned that the officer let him take his daughter to school and go to work despite the warrant, but the police made him promise to turn himself to the police station later that day, as reported by The Guardian.
The officer later that day took Meyers in handcuffs to the Cabarrus county magistrates office. He is required to appear in court on a misdemeanour charge of not returning the hired property.
Meanwhile, Meyers is set to appear in court on April 27. But for now, the Concord man could not be reached for any comment regarding his arrest and his indictment.
