Former neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, acquitted in the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin this summer, was held by Central Florida police after he reportedly threatened his estranged wife, Shellie, and her father with a gun, The New York Post reported on Monday.
Just two days after his wife filed for divorce, Zimmerman was taken into police custody following an incident at his estranged wife's parents home.
The Orlando Sentinel was reportedly told by a police spokesman that cops were invstigating a "possible domestic battery," with a gun present at the home, and police continued to determine if it had been used.
Shellie Zimmerman had reportedly been asking that her husband pay for a permanent life insurance policy with her named as the beneficiary, a divorce petition which had been made public last week revealed.
"I have a selfish husband and I think George is all about George," she said in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America." In that interview, she also admitted that she committed perjury during the trial.
It was revealed in the divorce petition that Shellie Zimmerman said she and her husband separated a month after Zimmerman was acquitted of second degree murder charges in the fatal death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman's acquittal sparked huge protests this summer, which even had President Obama weighing on the verdict.
Just a few days ago, Lake Mary police issued George Zimmerman a $256 speeding ticket, news reports said.
