18-year-old De'Marquise Elkins was convicted of murder in the shooting death on March 21 of a baby who was riding in a stroller with his mother in a town in Brunswick, Georgia, the Associated Press reported.
Jurors deliberated for close to two hours before finding Elkins guilty of killing 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. Prosecutors argued that Elkins killed Antonio in an attempted robbery while the baby's mother Sherry West had also been shot. 15-year-old Dominique Lang was also charged with murder and is set to be tried at a later date, news report said.
De'Marquise Elkins' attorney had previously asked for bond for his client, which the judge had denied.
In the attempted robbery attempt, prosecutors said that Elkins demanded the woman, who had been walking home from the post office, give him her purse while pointing the gun at her. Elkins first fired a warning shot than blasted her baby in the face after she told him that she had not any money.
Elkins' mother Karimah and the 18-year-old's sister led investigators to a pond where they found the revolver, the AP reported. She had been standing trial on charges of evidence tampering and lying to police, as was Elkins' sister.
The trial had been moved to Marietta, an Atlanta suburb, because of the highly publicized national attention the case had received.
Elkins' sentencing will be due in a manner of weeks.
