In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found Salmonella strains in nuts that made 11 people sick in nine different states. This forced a California pistachio producer to recall some of its products after the result of the center came out.
The Wonderful Pistachios brand which is a subgroup of the Wonderful Company and owns FIJI Water, POM Wonderful, and Wonderful Halos is now recalling a limited number of their products that were distributed to some of its retailers. Their products were sold nationwide in Canada under the brand names of Wonderful, Paramount Farms, and Trader Joe's, according to Boston.
Health authorities are now investigating 11 salmonella cases in nine different states including Connecticut, Alabama, Arizona, Michigan, Georgia, North Dakota, Washington, Virginia, and Minnesota. According to CDC, two people have been hospitalized but no deaths were reported. Authorities also advised consumer not to eat any recalled pistachios that might be purchased by them.
As reported by The Sentinel, the products that were recalled were the Wonderful Roasted No Salt Pistachios, 16 oz. with an expiry date of October 27, 2016, and lot codes of 1509123255601, 1509123255901, 1509123256001; Wonderful Roasted Shelled Salted Pistachios, 6 oz. with an expiry date of October 26, 2016, and lot code of 150912326040; and products with expiry date November 2, 2016, with a lot code of 1510123295301.
The people that were hospitalized all have eaten pistachios from the Wonderful brand and the center have also found an outbreak strain of Salmonella in uncooked pistachios that were tested at Paramount farms where these Wonderful pistachios were grown, as per Yahoo.
Salmonella is a gastrointestinal disease that causes severe forms of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps coupled with fever. The bacteria are commonly found in raw and or undercooked meat. It can also be found in poultry products like eggs.
