Shadow sport minister, Clive Efford says, English footballer Adam Johnson should not be allowed to return to professional football play. The former Sunderland player, who was released on bail, has been told that imprisonment sentence is expected on his case, if found guilty of sexual act with a 15 year old girl.
According to BBC News, Clive Efford, Member of Parliament for Eltham believes the 28 year old former Sunderland England winger should be banned from returning to the sports field. "There are certain professions you should not be allowed to pursue if you are on the sex offenders' register. He can't return to professional football," Efford said.
Johnson admitted on his recent trial on grooming the minor victim as well as one charge of sexual activity, Mirror reported. Upon entering guilty on the two charges, Sunderland football club terminated Johnson from the football club. Johnson is currently on bail for his pending sentence, which will be held in the next three weeks.
Judge's conclusion during his trial, his offences fell on a category of a five-year sentence, ranging of four to 10 years. However, if Johnson is on "lower end scale", Johnson could play again. Johnson had won 12 England caps as well as the Premier League with Manchester City.
Margaret Byrne, the chief of the Sunderland football club fly out of the country following the pressure over Johnson's trial. According to the Guardian, the Byrne was supposed to take on the defense witness stand, however, she did not appear and has not been out in the public since the case's conclusion.
Johnson's legal team claimed during the trial that chief executive Margaret Byrne was made aware the £60,000-a-week winger had groomed and kissed the schoolgirl Sunderland fan within hours of his arrest on March 2 last year.
Adam Johnson groomed the teenage girl in a series of text messaged. The disgraced footballer also asked the victim's age before offering to meet her to give her a signed football shirt. The two then met in Johnson's Range Rover on January 17 and January 30 last year.
He was arrested at his mansion in Castle Eden in March and denied all the charges. Sunderland issued a statement saying in light of his guilty pleas they had torn up his contract "with immediate effect".
