Google Nexus 5 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow via Joy ROM: Update Guide

Google Nexus 5 phones is now up for a custom update of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow through Joy ROM. The custom build offers three amazing user interfaces, which include Stock, CM13 and HTC's Sense.

Joy is the sole ROM to offer Google Nexus 5 phones three user interfaces. According to Team Android, the custom ROM will live up beyond the expectations of the Android custom software community. As expected, Joy is stable, fast and smooth bringing new features and lots of enhancements.

Before proceeding with the installation of Android 6.0.1 Joy, take note of the following preconditions:

  • Use only Google Nexus 5 as prescribed. Using other phones or models may cause irreparable damage on the phone.
  • Make sure phone is rooted.
  • Custom update requires custom recovery to flash ROM zip file on the phone.
  • Unlock bootloader first.
  • Install a USB driver here.
  • Back up all data.
  • Installing any custom ROM induces risk of damage on the device. Neither this site nor developers of the Joy ROM will be held responsible for such damage.

Here is a step-by-step guide to download and install Android 6.0.1 on Google Nexus 5:

1. Download Joy ROM on PC and extract boot.img from the zip file separately.

2. Connect device to PC using a USB cable.

3. Copy downloaded file from PC then paste to phone's SD card root.

4. Copy boot.img file then paste to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory.

5. Switch off device.

6. Go to the Bootloader Mode by press holding volume up button while connecting it again to PC using a USB cable. The device's LED shall turn blue as it gets into Bootloader Mode.

7. When in the Fastboot Mode on the phone, go to android-sdk-windowsplatform-tools directory on PC and open Command Prompt by doing shift + right click + open command prompt.

8. Type fastboot flash boot boot.img then press Enter.

9. Type fastboot reboot then press Enter.

10. Go to Recovery Mode. Turn on device by pressing volume up and down buttons a few times until LED light turns into a different color.

11. When in ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery, press "wipe data/factory reset" using the power button to navigate.

12. Press "wipe cache partition."

13. From CWM Recovery, go to "advanced" then press "wipe dalvik cache."

14. Go back to main recovery screen and press "install zip from SD card."

15. Press "choose zip from SD card." Use the volume keys to navigate to Max Fury then press the power button to choose it.

16. Confirm installation and wait until it is completed.

17. Once completed, go to +++++Go Back+++++ and choose "reboot system now."

Check software version now.
