Netflix does not disappoint with the launch of its fourth season. The first episode introduces us to three powerful women who can make the lives of Frank and/or Claire Underwood much more miserable. Plus, with all episodes now downloadable in a click, the finale is available with just a few clicks. You don't have to wait for months to get to the ending. But read the bottom at your risk (spoiler warning).
The Sydney Morning Herald says in its review that The House of Cards' first episode for its fourth season does not disappoint. The break-up of Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Robin) Underwood at the end of season 3 has left their marriage and their presidential campaign uncertain. The trailers preceding this episode do show a feistier US President who shows no sign of giving up or stopping.
Now throw into this mix three powerful ladies played by three equally formidable actresses, and the First Couple may find themselves fighting on all fronts. Ellen Burstyn makes a silent but powerful appearance as Claire's mom, a Texan aristocrat who has had her fair share of battles, No doubt she taught Claire a thing or two, and she probably arrived in Washington to give her daughter more arsenal. Then there's the highly publicized role of Neve Campbell, who turns out to be Claire's new political strategist who may prove to be a match to Frank's ruthless, manipulative chief of staff Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly).
Finally, there's Cicely Tyson whose performance still pulls you in, despite her 91-year-old age. Tyson plays a powerful Texas member of congress, whose job Claire wants to take.
Den of Geek rightfully says that the show has to amp its game despite its high ratings. Its main competitor is the real-life political power play going on in the campaigns of the presidential nominees. The mud-slinging and mutual accusations going on between Trump, Cruz, Clinton, Sanders, and company can give the critically-acclaimed show a run for its money.
Netflix sweetens the deal by making the entire fourth season downloadable. This practically eliminates the frustration and nail-biting suspense of having to wait another week before catchign another episode. GIizmodo actually caught the last scene of the finale - and SPOILER ALERT ---- he mentions terrorists, real-life executions on live TV, and the steel-hearted Underwoods unperturbed, unrepentant, ready to take on the world...and seemingly united.
The House of Cards has already been renewed for a fifth season, but this fourth one promises to be a turbulent, wild ride ahead.
