Yeshiva University High School, a top private educational institution in New York City, admitted it failed to protects its students from physical and sexual abuse, CBS Local reported on Tuesday. A lawsuit has accused two former faculty members - George Finkelstein and Macy Gordon- of abuse over a 20 year period at the Washington Heights campus, in Harlem.
Yeshiva University's insistence that they promised to "meet or exceed" the openness of other educational institutions embroiled in similar scandals, like Penn State was slammed by attorney Kevin Mulhearn who has sued the school.
"I think this is a whitewash. They're trying to establish with the community the fact they're being open and candid and this report indicates the opposite," Mulhearn said.
The school's report acknowledged "multiple incidents of sexual and physical abuse took places... multiple instances in which the school either failed to protect the safety of its students or did not respond to the allegations at all."
YU President Richard Joel calld the findings "a source of profound shame and sadness for our institution," while offering victims his "deepest and most heartfelt remorse."
YU has also admitted it still has withheld details as a legal tactic in light of the lawsuit.
