A suspension is given to Florida State University's fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon following the investigation of another fraternity over hazing activity allegations. The university officials released the news on Wednesday after a complaint was submitted to the school's hazing website in January.
The Florida State University stated that the hazing activity happened in 2013 and no criminal charges will be filed as police said too much time had passed, Tallahassee Democrat reported. However, the university officials will still give the members of the fraternity involved a Student Code of Conduct sanctions.
According to the statement, Tau Kappa Epsilon member said pledges were forced to join in a drinking game called "Old South," where they were made to act as slaves, Yahoo News reported. They were also made to serve drinks, steal traffic cones, and left stranded Thomasville and Ocala and ordered to go back to Tallahassee without their phones and wallet.
Dean of Students Victoria Dobiyanski decided to suspend the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity right away. Fraternity members who were involved on the said incident were also removed from the fraternity.
An unnamed member who reported the incident on January 28 on a school's hazing website said he waited until after graduating to report the 2013 incident. The decision of the suspension was also amid to the police investigation of another FSU fraternity, Omega Psi Phi.
The said fraternity was being disciplined by university officials for two weeks, according to the WCTV TV. The alleged hazing occurred last year to at least one member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. However, the incident was reported this year.
The Tau Kappa Epsilon national chapter released their statement, stating they're taking the allegations seriously, and they don't tolerate racism. Tallahassee attorney Don Pumphrey is representing TKE in the Student Code of Conduct hearings. He said he hopes this is incident changes campus Greek culture for the better.
