The University of Michigan's oldest sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, has disbanded after it committed a "serious violations" according to the national chapter on Tuesday. The said Michigan sorority has been around for 137 years and known to be the oldest sorority on the said university.
The Detroit Free Press reported, the Eta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta of University of Michigan announced the disbandment on Monday. Liz Rnick, the spokeswoman for the national chapter released a statement to the said source through email.
It said, "Despite ongoing support and education provided to the chapter by Fraternity officers and staff, recent chapter activities constituted serious violations of Fraternity policies and were contrary to the Fraternity's basic principles." The spokeswoman also refused to tell specifically the reason of the chapter's disbandment.
A university spokesman, Rick Fitzgerald said the sorority chapter was suspended for its student members' behavior, including under-age drinking and hazing in January, according to Michigan Live. Previously, a video was also spreading, showing the chapter members drinking alcohol.
The university spokesman added that the said video has been one of the grounds of the chapter's initial suspension. Fitzgerald declined to reveal further details on the nature of hazing committed. He also said that the disbandment was decided by the national organization.
Jack Herrington, the neighbor to the sorority house said, though it has been closed, that won't be enough to break the bond between members. "You just never wish that upon anybody. The rest of their college career will be very different than they thought it would be," Fox2 quoted. Students living in the house on Washtenaw in Ann Arbor can still stay in the house until the end of April.
Kappa Alpha Theta was the oldest sorority on U-M's campus, having been in existence for 137 years. It was the first Greek-lettered fraternity among women, according to the national website. It is also the second U-M Greek organization to be disbanded in recent years.
