The Obama Administration is facing multiple subpoenas issued by the Republican Chairman of a House Committee. The subpoenas are seeking documents regarding the investigation of the wastewater spill from a Colorado mine.
Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee Rep. Rob Bishop is looking for the files from the investigating group of the Interior Department and the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the spillage at the inactive Gold King mine in southwestern Colorado, as per ABC News.
Daily Signal noted that the Colorado mine spillage last August 5 was US Environmental Protection Agency's fault after its workers dug a tunnel going into the entrance of the mine. The agency's actions allegedly caused the spillage of the 3 million gallons of water contaminated with mercury, arsenic and other toxic metals to enter the creeks and nearby rivers in Silverton Colorado.
According to Hays Griswold who headed the operations of the cleanup, he knew that the inactive mine could be harnessing a lot of water. However, they thought the brow was deep enough for them to dig in which turned out shallow -only a feet or two -making it too close and caused it to crack. This eventually provided an outlet to where the water came out, as reported by NBC.
Based on Bishop's assumptions, the Interior Department had its hands on the committee's review which blocked the issuance of the important details and information about the case. He added that the Army Corps officials made some serious reservations on the facts of the investigation.
However, the Interior Department is confident that they have been truthful with the investigation. They said they have been very cooperative with regards to the committee's request in relation to the investigation and even released thousands of pages of documents. They added that they are willing to continue to facilitate the committee's oversight interest. The Interior Department also believed that it is too early to issue a subpoena considering the fact that the investigation is still ongoing.
