A Democratic representative who hails from Louisville filed a legislation that would require men who are seeking drugs for erectile dysfunction like Viagra to get married. The new bill that was submitted to the Kentucky House also requires men to get a note of consent from their wives and swear on the Holy Bible that they won't use it with anyone but their wives.
On Thursday, Rep. Mary Lou Marzian filed House Bill 396 as a response to anti-abortion measures that she said put an undue burden on women. The new bill requires women to get 24 hours counseling in advance from health care profession if they wanted to have an abortion. NBC News reported that that the abortion bill became a law after Gov. Matt Bevin placed his signature in it.
Although reports say that it has a slim chance of becoming a law, Times reported that the bill is a symbolic attempt to prove a point about the role of the government in private medical decisions. Rep. Marzian is hopeful that the measure will encourage women to declare "enough is enough". She pointed out that it is 'intrusive and ridiculous' for the elected government officials to be inserting themselves into private and personal medical decisions. "We need to allow women and men to make their own decisions with their doctor and their family," the lawmaker added.
The House Bill 396, which requires men seeking for erectile dysfunction medication to make at least two office visits to a medical practitioner. The men are also required to swear on the Holy Bible that they are married and will use the medication only when having sex with their current wives. Lastly, men should present a signed proof of permission from their wives as WDRB reported.
Among three members of the Kentucky House, Rep. Marzian was one to vote against the Informed Consent Bill on January. While Marzian acknowledged that the legislation is tongue-in-cheek, she said that the government's act of intruding one's personal life, such as making health decisions for women, is very serious to her.
