Arkansas State University Lockdown Lifted, Caused By Student Video Project

By

A brief lockdown was imposed at Arkansas State University after people, who were wearing costumes, were mistaken to be armed intruders.

In a report by AoL, the lockdown took place in Jonesboro campus on Sunday after officials received reports of two males with weapons near the student union. A follow-up call then reported three males, instead of two, were wearing black and carrying weapons along a street near the student union.

The lockdown was lifted an hour later after police searched for the reported gunmen. On the Facebook page of the school, the university announced there were student filmmakers shooting for a video project near the area where the reported gunmen were spotted. The Jonesboro police added that the people who called in might have mistaken the actors for being armed intruders as they were wearing costumes, ABC News reported.

University Police Capt. Jarrod Long said there were no arrests made and no guns were found in the area. Jonesboro police also confirmed this, adding no shots were fired and that officials checking other buildings found no gunmen, New York Daily News reported.

"Those students have been located and talked to," Arkansas State spokesman Bill Smith said. "There was apparently no threat at all and no gunman."

This is the second time in less than three months Arkansas State University has been on lockdown for a gunman on campus.

Back in December 10 of last year, a man with a shotgun drove onto the campus. He has been identified as Brad Bartelt who originally intended to commit a mass shooting. Aside from his shotgun, he also had gasoline and propane with him. He tried to commit suicide but later on surrendered and was arrested.

Arkansas State University, which currently has 13,100 students, resumed with their normal operations after the lockdown was lifted.
