Greek police arrested three heavily armed British citizen in the main border crossing Turkey. The security officials said that these men were carrying dozens of guns and thousands of rounds ammunition.
The Daily Mail reported that the suspects involved in carrying loads of guns and ammunitions were Iraqi Kurds. Police officials did not reveal the suspects' name because it may affect the ongoing investigation. Reports say that the police have seized eight scopes, 200,000 .22-caliber bullets and four air rifles.
The three suspects, age 39, 28, and 22 all have British passports with them and was arrested in two separate operations, as reported by The Guardian. However, the coast guard said that according to their passports, the suspects' age were 40, 46, and 35 years old.
The 39-year-old man was found to have four pistols on him and have 200,000 cartridges when he was caught by the police while crossing the Turkish border. Meanwhile, the police caught 27,000 cartridges and 18 rifles from two men when they were apprehended at a town near the border after days of surveillance. Two of the suspects were found in a parking in Alexandroupolis, which is located at the northern Greek port.
On Sunday, security officials say that they do not have evidence yet if these men were connected to the Isis, but have informed Interpol and Europol about the situation. The officials added that while the weapons were not combat rifles, they could have been used for training. IBTimes reported that an investigation has now been executed by counterterrorism services who suspects that all three men belong to a terrorist or criminal organization, as well as arms trafficking.
All three suspects were taken before the local magistrate on suspicion of smuggling and illegal possession of weapons. Officials from the National Intelligence Agency and police counterterrorism are on their way to Alexandroupolis to investigate.
