Doctored Boston Photo: New York Paper Takes Flak for Allegedly Adjusting Graphic Cover

Two known New York City publications are taking harsh criticism for their loose coverage of the Boston Marathon terrorist attacks, Yahoo News and the Huffington Post reported.

Tuesday's cover page of the New York Daily News reportedly showed a doctored photo of a woman sitting in a pool of blood following the aftermath of the bombing. The publication used the Boston Globe's John Timucki photo of a woman as she received aid surrounded by blood on the sidewalk.

Charles Apple, an editor for Orange County Register wrote a blog titled "I Hate to Make an Accusation But..." and suggested the newspaper doctored the image in order to remove some of the gore of the original photograph.

The New York Daily News photograph, the woman is doctored so much so that her pants are shown where the blood should be.

"Looks to me like somebody did a little doctoring of that photo to remove a bit of gore. If you can't stomach the gore, don't run the photo. Period," Apple wrote.

The New York Post also was derided on Tuesday for their inaccuracies in its reporting of terror attacks; the publication inflated the death toll to 12. As the day wore on, The New York Post backtracked writing that the "official death toll was three, but a law-enforcement source told The Post it could be as high as 12."

The paper was also the first to say that a "Saudi National" had been taken "into custody" by police at a local Boston Hospital, which authorities later denied ever happening.

The New York Daily News has yet to comment on its decision to reportedly tweak the photograph to make it more accessible for its cover page.
