Manufacturer Guthy-Renker allegedly hid results of multiple safety studies on WEN hair products linked to serious balding and hair breakage. Chaz Dean, WEN hair care owner, tries to settle a lawsuit filed against him by over 17,000 angry customers.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) said that Guthy-Renker, the company responsible for making the WEN hair line, did not disclose the results of its safety studies on WEN products. Guthy-Renker reportedly released only the results of 4 out of 13 safety studies they conducted.
There is a major loophole in the law related to cosmetic product making. The current law does not require companies to submit safety studies or customer complaints to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, there is a bill being passed called the Personal Care Products Safety Act that will tighten regulations for manufacturers. It will require them to reveal the ingredients on products and their possible health effects.
WEN hair care products have been reported to cause severe balding and hair breakage. More than 17,000 angry women customers have filed a lawsuit against WEN owner Chaz Dean and Guthy-Renker. PAHomepage.com reported that another woman named Jeanine Piazza plans to file a complaint after experiencing severe hair loss caused by WEN cleansing conditioners.
Guthy-Renker claims that only natural ingredients were used in making WEN hair products. Yet, the EWG revealed that the WEN hair care line have synthetic chemicals and allergens that may have caused balding and irritation.
Lawyer Herald previously reported that Chaz Dean is seeking to reach a settlement to a lawsuit filed against him by over 200 women customers. Legal actions were temporarily on hold as both parties try to reconcile.
However, Attorney Bill Vinsko said that plaintiffs need to prove that the WEN hair products are defective if ever the case goes to trial. A spokesperson for WEN earlier said that there was no scientific evidence to support claims of their products causing hair loss on customers.
The WEN hair care line continues to be sold in the market. If the Personal Care Products Safety Act would be approved, the FDA might be forced to pull out WEN from the market for good.
