George Zimmerman Trial: Neighborhood Watch Volunteer's Mother Writes Letter on One-Year Anniversary of Son's Arrest

By

Gladys Zimmerman, the mother of the Florida neighborhood accused of fatally shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a confrontation in a gated community in Sanford, released a letter in which she criticized the media and the justice system for their role in the case, CBS News reported. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the February 26, 2012 where he shot and killed Martin.

'April 11, 2012 will be remembered by the Zimmerman family as the day the justice system failed us as Americans, and as a consequence an innocent man was arrested for a crime he did not commit, solely to placate the masses,' Gladys Zimmerman wrote on Twitter.

'It is astounding that despite the vast amount of information and evidence now available that support George's self-defense claim, the majority of the media avoids its publication,' she continued. She writes that a 'false narrative' of the case has been widely publicized based on the 'little evidence' made available to the public.

Last week, the family of Martin settled a wrongful death claim against the homeowners association of the gated community where he was killed. Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Martin family, filed paperwork outlining the settlement, which is thought to be more than $1 million, at a courthouse in Sanford, Florida, according to the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

Representatives of The Retreat at Twin Lakes subdivision at one point in the negotiations offered the Martin family a $1 million settlement, Shawn Vincent, a spokesman for Zimmerman's defence team, recently told Reuters.

Zimmerman is scheduled to go to trial on June 10.
