Fort Knox Shooting: Soldier Apprehended, Charged with Murder with Death of Civilian Employee

By

Marquinta E. Jacobs has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a civilian employee at Fort Knox, according to the Associated Press A Thursday federal court filing by the FBI said that Jacobs fired a 45-caliber handgun at the victim, "striking him several times," in a parking lot outside the parking lot of the Army Human Resources Command building on the post, chron.com reported. The victim was transported by ambulance to the Ireland Army Community Hospital hospital on the base, where he was pronounced dead, news reports said.

A 911 call was received by the Fort Knox Police at 5:40 p.m. and they responded to the scene within minutes. The base was placed on a lockdown 10 minutes later that prevented the entry and exit of vehicles onto the base. The lockdown was lifted an hour later though the base remained on an enhanced security status.

"Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are investigating a personal incident and not a random act of violence," said CID spokesman Chris Grey said in the statement. Fort Knox Command is located about 35 miles outside Louisville, and is home 40,000 soldiers and their families. It houses several large commands like Army Human Resources Command and Army Recruiting Command.

The violence put the area on lockdown shortly on Wednesday evening near Kentucky's capital. The Command reportedly employs upwards of four thousand employees. No other individuals were injured during the exchange Wednesday.

The hearing dates have yet to be released.
