Lawyer Angus McBride, who successfully represented Rebekah Brooks over involvement in phone-hacking is now the general counsel for News UK. Regarded as one of the country's top defense lawyers, his role includes overseeing all legal activity and compliance for the News UK, which changed its name from News International in 2013.
Angus McBride cleared all charges of the former News of the World editor, Rebekah Brooks. He is currently a partner at Kingsley Napley and will officially take over as general counsel for the publisher of the Sun and the Times on April.
In 2014, the court acquitted Rebekah Brooks of all charges relating to phone hacking during her time as the editor of the News of the World. The Guardian reported that McBride was to give up the work that he loves. But Brooks was thrilled that the top lawyer has decided to join their company. She added that he is always ten steps ahead and has a huge capacity to grasp quickly the full spectrum of issues.
News UK trusts Angus McBride's ability and believes that the agency will benefit from his legal expertise, strategic approach, and wise advice. Financial Times reported that McBride's specialism is in criminal rather than civil law. He will replace Emma Moloney who joined News UK in 2013. Angus McBride appeared in court beside Brooks almost every day of the grueling nine-month-old Bailey Trial.
McBride said that he hopes that his 25 years in practice working at the cutting edge of high-profile litigation will strengthen News UK in confronting the ever more complex legal landscape the industry faces. Press Gazette reported that McBride would relish the challenge that is set before him.
He is delighted to be joining News UK and is looking forward to working with its superb team of lawyers to provide legal assistance and advice throughout the company. The executive of the team, Rebekah Brooks also expressed her appreciation toward Angus McBride for accepting the role of general counsel.
