Nathan Capponi, a 6-year-old boy from Maine, was accidentally struck and killed on Wednesday by his father, Kevin, as the 36-year old backed up his snowplow truck.
Kevin was finishing up clearing the snow from the family's driveway after Tuesday's winter storm in Greene. He did not see his son playing on his scooter in the driveway when the accident took place at 6:45 a.m, Stephen McCauseland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety said, and reported by Online Sentinel.
Nathan was rushed by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Greene is located 22 miles west of the capital, Augusta, in southwestern Maine.
Melissa Carmichael and Ben McGray, employees at the local gathering spot, said news of the accident spread quickly, as one customer after another talked about the pain that the boy's father must feel.
"I can't imagine what he's going through," Carmichael said.
"It must be horrible," said McGray, whose mother once baby-sat Kevin Capponi.
Capponi, who graduated from Lewiston High School in 1996, reacted with a message on his Facebook page:
"Please forgive me and my family. I love him with all my heart. It is now broken."
