A New Jersey Transit train was forced to make an unscheduled stop on Saturday, tossing 16 people in East Rutherford after a large fight broke out inside one its cars.
The fight broke out shortly after the express train left from Secaucus, traveling north on its way to to Ramsey and Port Jervis. Ten minutes into the ride, at about 4:20 p.m., fight broke out, according to New Jersey Star-Ledger. By the time officials got involved, 16 people were ejected from the train, and two were issued summons for disorderly conduct.
One person was treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to the Associated Press. No arrests were made, just evictions from the train.
There has been no explanation as to what started the brawl, but alcohol consumption during the St Patrick's Day may have been a factor, according to reports.
Gary Poedubicky, New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety director, warned about the dangers of consuming large amounts of alcohol on St. Patrick's Day,
"Whether you are gathering with friends at the local pub or attending a parade, if alcohol is part of the festivities, make sure you designate a sober driver to get you home safely," he said in a statement. "You'll not only be ensuring your safety, but the safety of everyone else who is sharing the road with you."
The train resumed service 20 minutes after the incident.
