Peter MacKay, PC, QC, is set to join the global law firm of Baker & McKenzie as a partner in Toronto. Moreover, he is also expected to advise on a series of matters, including the government and regulatory enforcement and compliance matters.
According to Huff Post Politics, the former Central Nova MP will be joining the Toronto office of global law firm Baker & McKenzie as a partner as per announcement of the law firm on Monday. MacKay, which is a former Crown prosecutor, will give advice to firms doing global business and international companies doing business in Canada.
Baker & McKenzie's managing partner Kevin Coon even stated that the firm's global clients face several guideline challenges when trying to shift across borders. "I can't think of anyone who is better placed than Peter MacKay to assist our clients on the legal, business and compliance challenges of today's marketplace," he stated.
MacKay worked in the House of Commons for 20 years and was also a leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada prior to deciding to collaborate with Harper's Canadian Alliance in December 2003. "I have been honoured to serve the Canadian people for many years in the House of Commons and Government of Canada, and the time is right for me to transition to the private sector and begin the next phase of my career," MacKay claimed via Montreal Gazette.
Baker & McKenzie, on the other hand, which has roots in Chicago, has had an office in Toronto operating for over 50 years. It is considered as one of the largest law firms globally, with more than 4,300 lawyers working out of 77 offices in 47 countries, and yearly revenue of more than US$2.4 billion. "Our global clients face a patchwork of regulatory rules and compliance challenges as they grow their business in Canada and across borders," said Kevin Coon, the managing partner of Baker & McKenzie's Toronto office, in the release. He added, "I can't think of anyone who is better placed than Peter MacKay to assist our clients on the legal, business and compliance challenges of today's marketplace."
Moreover, the former MP will also be giving out his talents and experience in various areas as a member of Baker & McKenzie's growing government enforcement and compliance practice. The company also promises that he will also advise on corporate compliance, white collar crime, investigations and business crimes, antitrust, international arbitration, securities enforcement and litigation, as reported by Cape Breton Post.
For now, Mackay will also offer his strategic advice to Canadian companies building businesses worldwide and international companies having businesses in Canada. His appointment in the law firm will be effective on February 1.
