Illegal oil bunker site ceased by Nigerian Navy; Major operators still on the loose

An illegal oil bunkering site was uncovered by the Nigerian Navy. The said oil site was located at the ship builder's yard owned by the Federal Government at the Port Harcourt Complex in River State.

Commodore Sanusi Ibrahim, Commander of the Nigeria Navy Ship Pathfinder, told the news team about the illegal site. He divulged that five suspects were arrested during the operation. Lt. Commander Haruna who represented Ibrahim on a press conference said that they raided the area and discovered seven different storage areas in a discreet make shift facility at the Ship Builders yard with close proximity to Ibeto Cement and NPA as reported by Buzz Nigeria.

Reports from the Nigerian Nation said that during the said investigation, the authorities discovered activities that involved storing of illegally refined petroleum product and moving them out using tanker trucks and wooden boats. Diesel stored in several drums and two trucks waiting to carry the petroleum products and five suspected individuals were among the evidence that the authorities have found.

According to The Premium Times, the Navy chief said that they are going to identify the sources of this products' and the people who purchase it. They are now interrogating the suspects to get an in-depth information of who the operators are and how they maintained the site to be undetected by authorities for quite some time. Ha added that the Navy is now looking into some of the individuals who were recognized as sponsors and owners of the illegal site.

Commodore Ibrahim assured the public that they would continue a 24-hour patrol and community-based intelligence gathering strategy. They will also continue to seek oil thieves that sabotage oil and gas installations. He called on to the public to continue providing the Navy and other government agencies with significant information to enable timely arrest of this oil thieves and pipeline vandals.
