Police in upstate New York are searching for a suspect after shootings at two different businesses - John's Barber Shop and Gaffey's Fast Lube and Car Wash- left four people dead and at least two wounded, The New York Post reported.
Joseph Malone, the police chief for Herkimer and Mohawk, said authorities are looking for 64-year-old Kurt Meyers, of Mohawk, NY. Officials have said that guns and ammunition were found inside his apartment after emergency crews were sent to a fire there on Wednesday morning.
Soon after, police said "two people were fatally shot and two others wounded at John's Barber Shop, around the corner from the apartment. Officials say the second shooting happened about a mile away in Herkimer, where two people were killed at Gaffey's Fast Lube and Car Wash," according to The Post. Myers reportedly used a long gun for the attacks.
Meyers remains at-large as of Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Police remain flummoxed as to his whereabouts; "some are focusing on a jewelry store in Herkimer... some on Main Street, near the car wash and oil change business... Officials in Mohawk, (in a region known as the Mohawk Valley) however, some seemed to think the suspect was still on foot somewhere. Other reports suggested he may have been picked up by a taxi," The Post also reported.
In total, six people were shot, about 65 miles east of Syracuse. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was set to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, as police SWAT teams and a helicopter continued their manhunt for Meyers. The Utica Observer-Dispatch reported that Myers was last seen wearing a flannel shirt.
"I think this guy is trying to prove a point," one man said. "It definitely seems like he knew what he was doing."
Amanda Viscomi, Herkimer's acting clerk-treasurer for the village of 7,700, told The Associated Press the shooting at Gaffey's happened a few blocks from village hall.
"Everybody's on lockdown, all the schools, the college, the village," Viscomi said. "It's very, very scary."
