U2's The Edge Facing Environmental Lawsuit For Multi-Million Mansion Project in Malibu

The United State's oldest and most-publicized environmentalist group, Sierra Club, has filed a lawsuit against a member of one of the most popular rock bands of all time.

The Edge, guitarist of the world-famous band, U2, will be facing a lawsuit filed by the Sierra Club. The Edge, whose real name is David Howell Evans, plans to build a set of mansions on a 156 acre lot in Sweetwater Mesa area. The project, which is also backed by four other Irish investors, has been approved by the California Coastal Commission (CCC) last month after almost 10 years of legal setbacks.

According to a report by RT, CCC's executive director initially stated that the project could be one of the three worst projects "in terms of environmental devastation." Years later, the multi-million project had adjusted its plans, thus getting approval to build. The project will dedicate 140 acres in creating an open space for hikers and horse-riders. The Edge has agreed to build the mansions closer to each other on a lower-lying area so the view of the coastline will be untouched.

However, the Sierra Club continues to fight for environmental concerns. On Thursday last week, the organization filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles county Superior Court stating that the commission violated state law in approving the construction of The Edge's project.

The lawsuit claims that the lead agency of the project did not fully assess the project's negative impacts on the government. This include air quality and greenhouse gas emissions, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The lawsuit also stated that the agency did not consider or suggested alternatives to the project that would make it friendlier to the environment, such as suggesting to build just one home or no mansions at all.

The lawsuit further explains that the CCC violated the California Coastal Act for disobeying the local coastal plan when it approved a non-essential private project that will disrupt sensitive habitats.
