In an unusual ruling, Denver District Court judge sentenced former policeman for eight years imprisonment for sexually harassing a woman in 2010, but also granted him bail while he will appeal the conviction.
Hector Paez, was convicted of second-degree kidnapping, sexual assault and false reporting during a two week trial, reported Fox 31.
According to CBS Denver, Paez's wife pleaded to the judge John Madden for only probation saying that imprisonment would be equal to death sentence to him as he served in police for four years. Apart from eight years in jail, judge sentenced Paez on sex-offender probation for a 10-year to life term.
Lynn Kimbrough with the district attorney's office said, "Over the objection of the prosecution, the judge then granted Paez a $100,000 bond while he appeals his conviction"
The charges against Paez say that in May 2010 the former policeman arrested and took a woman to an isolated area where he forced her into sexual act by threatening her to take to jail. But Paez denied the charges and requested for some leniency towards him. "Why should I show remorse for something I didn't do?"
But, for the victim the sentencing was not enough to give her justice.
"I'm very upset. I don't think that his sentence was just for his crime. He's a police officer and should have a little tougher sentence because he is the law," she told CBS4.
