A former State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo student, stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death. The young man also murdered a male Geneseo student before killing himself, authorities said Monday.

Colin Kingston, 24 apparently distraught over a breakup with his girlfriend Kelsey Annese, stabbed her and another Geneseo student, Matthew Hutchinson, 24, using a large knife bought at a retail store, in an off-campus home few blocks from SUNY Geneseo early Sunday Morning. The New York Times reported Colin Kingston called his father, Daniel Kingston around 6 a.m on Sunday saying he hurt his girlfriend Kelsey Annese and was considering taking his own life. His father's call to 911 alerted the authorities but by the time the officers arrived, all three were found dead in Annese's bedroom.

In another report by CNN, Police Spokesman Jeffrey Szczesniak said that were no signs of forced entry into the house and no indication of a struggle. The back door was unlocked. It all seemed to have happened very quickly. Investigators think the killings occurred between 5:30 a.m. when officers ticketed cars on the street and did not see Kingston's vehicle and 6:21 a.m. when Kingston called his father. "When the phone call was terminated by Colin, shortly thereafter Colin [appeared to] have taken his own life," Szczesniak said.

Police reported that four others were home, where several members of the Geneseo women's basketball team lived, at the time of the incident. No one heard anything alarming.

Kingston and Annese had a relationship of about three years and broke up recently causing distraught to Kingston. Szczesniak said Kingston had made several suicide comments but no threats against anybody else.

Meanwhile, the news shocked the SUNY campus where two of the deceased were student athletes. According to Buffalo News, SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles expressed her condolences to the family and friends of the three young people in a statement on Monday.

"It's a profoundly sad day for all of us at SUNY Geneseo and in the village, as we begin to mourn these heartbreaking deaths," she said. As a symbol of mourning, the flag at College Circle has been lowered to half-staff.

Annese was a senior from Webster N.Y. majoring in education and Spanish and a member of the women's basketball team. Hutchinson was a senior from British Columbia and a member of the hockey team and Geneseo fire department. Kingston was a former student and a member of the men's basketball team but had not been a full-time student since 2013. SUNY-Geneseo is a campus in the historic part of New York State.
