Gunfire broke in the lobby of New Castle County Courthouse located in Wilmington, Delaware, killing three people including the gunman.
According to CNN reports the man entered the courthouse around 8 a.m. and began shooting, said Police Sgt. Paul Shavack, adding that the shooting was not the act of terrorism. Police said they are finding out how the gunman died.
The gunman also shot two policemen, who survived the shooting because of their bulletproof jackets. They were treated and released from the hospital, police chief William Jopp said as per the CNN reports.
"I saw two shots. I saw people going on the ground so I just made a U-turn and ran out of the building. After that I don't know what happened," Jose Beltran, a Court of Common Please worker told DelawareOnline.
The Daily Journal reports that the gunman is likely to be the father of man who kidnapped his three daughters and was in federal prison for bank fraud. However, police have not released the identity of the gunman.
Immediately after the gunfire, the courthouse was evacuated and police searched every single room, Shavack said. The courthouse will be closed Tuesday.
Joseph R. "Beau" Biden, Delaware's Attorney General and the son of the vice president, spoke at a news conference about the shooting, Monday afternoon. "This is not a random act of violence," he said, but stems for a long custody dispute that "has lasted in our court system for many years."
Biden said that the police officials would disclose the identity of the gunman once they investigate the entire matter.
