Fort Myers doctor facing charges for DUI, drug possession

A doctor of Fort Myers, Southwest in Florida is now facing charges for driving under influence and drug possession.

According to Wink News, Luis Aponte, 40, was arrested for DUI and drug possession. In the police report, Aponte ran through a red light and hit a median at the crossing of Cape Coral Parkway and Coronado Parkway. He had vomit all over him, smelled of alcohol and became uneasy once officers performed a DUI investigation.

News Press wrote that the family medicine doctor is facing six misdemeanor charges including DUI and marijuana possessions. He was arrested at the scene of the car crash at Cape Coral.

Police reports said that witnesses saw Aponte driving a 2014 gray BMW 535i, ran a red light at a slow rate of speed and hit into the median and traffic control device. One witness found the doctor passed out behind the wheels. Police also noticed he had vomit on his pants and on the floorboard and a smell of alcoholic beverage, the source added.

During investigations, Aponte denied that he was in a car accident but changed his story when the officer pointed out his car. Police noted that he had vomit on his pants and on the floorboard of the car. Aponte failed a field sobriety test.

Cape Coral Police found several pills, marijuana wax and marijuana pipe in Aponte's car Fox 4 confirmed. Aponte is an ER doctor with admitting privileges only at the Lee Memorial Health System. He is married with two kids. Some neighbors describe the doctor as a pleasant man and all around good guy.

Fox 4 attempted to ask Lee Memorial Health System for comments but they did not release statements yet.

Aponte has been release from jail on $7,500 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 20 at 1:00 PM.
