On Wednesday, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested a nuclear bomb. Members of the UN Security Council hold an emergency meeting and demanded to raise further sanctions because of the drawing threats. Meanwhile, most of the weapon experts expressed their skepticism that North Korea was able to test an advanced bomb.
Former US analysts and officials stated that although the US wanted to impose more sanctions, other major powers are hesitant to take firm steps necessary to force Pyongyang to abandon its atomic bomb program. Meanwhile, China was angered due to the underground explosion which alarmed their quake monitors. Kyodo news agency in Japan also made a phone call to the White House suggesting a firm global response was need as soon as possible.
A wide collection of International sanctions is already on the way for North Korea as UN Security Council member held a meeting and is expected to discuss possibilities of adding these in the following days. UN said it would act at the soonest time possible to bring about significant new measures. Yahoo News reported that China would likely support more sanctions from the UN though North Korea is considered to be its main ally.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was quoted after talking to President Obama, "It is a grave security threat to damage the peace and safety of the region and international society."
Since North Korea has tested its first nuclear bomb in 2006, it has been under Security Council sanctions. One of the sanctions includes cracking down North Korea's attempts to receive and ship banned cargo. The Security Council also tightened Pyongyang's financial restrictions after the nuclear test was conducted in 2013.
US Republican leaders of the House of Representatives are now considering a vote as soon as next week to apply tighter restrictions on foreign companies doing business with North Korea. The presidential candidates from the Republican Party blamed President Obama for being ineffective in controlling foreign policy.
North Korea have named their atomic bomb as the 'H-bomb of justice' and its state news agency denied that they would use it to attack neighboring countries. North Korea said that it would not use its 'H-bomb of justice' unless their country is being attacked first.
While the US State Department confirmed that Pyongyang had conducted a nuclear bomb test, the administration is doubtful that it had created a hydrogen bomb. The nuclear test took place two days after of what is believed to be Kim Jong Un's birthday, North Korea's supreme leader.
