Georgia Tops Least Likely States To Legalize Marijuana Use

By

This 2016, the marijuana decriminalization has come a long way and a total of 23 states have legalized medicinal pot. Starting with California back in 1996, the progression of marijuana even now being legalized in four states for recreational use, still does not deter the state of Georgia.

Reportedly, Georgia is among the least likely states to consider the legalization of marijuana use. Based on a review by 24/7 Wall St., as reported by USA Today, Georgia runs the third spot among eleven states that have yet to consider medicinal pot.

Despite opinions among voters and legislators who would want to welcome the marijuana law, citizens have no choice to wait for the high officials to determine the state's decision. However, judging from Georgia's history with marijuana related offenses and issues, it would become harder to accept this change.

Among the least likely states listed to still reject legalization of marijuana, Georgia had the most number of arrests and related offenses in the data. Purportedly, the Peach State had a total of 30,611 marijuana-related arrests and 309 marijuana-related arrests for every 100,000 residents, 24/7 Wall St. reports. This rate exceeds the national rate of 239 marijuana-related arrests for every 100,000 people.

As it is, laws remain strict in the state and reportedly, an adult in Georgia caught in possession of more than 1 ounce of marijuana can face a $5,000 fine, felony charges, and a minimum of one year incarceration.

Certain members of the legislation aim to address this issue during the 2016 legislative session. Meanwhile, Georgians who are advocates for marijuana use are also doing their part and have purportedly released ads and videos to urge Georgia voters to support marijuana legalization.

To date, patients who are eager to get cannabis oil for their illnesses are forced to travel across other states to avail the medicine. This, however, is a direct violation of federal law. To this, supporters of medical marijuana continue the medical cannabis fight.
