Sony PlayStation VR Update: PSVR price, exact release date still pending as it skips CES 2016 appearance

By

The Sony PlayStation VR price and release date remain pending as it skips appearance in the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016. The PSVR is rumored to launch before July with a $399 price tag.

Details on the market price and exact launch date of the PlayStation VR are still unknown as Sony remained mum about the device in the CES 2016 press conference in Las Vegas. Gamers and Sony fans were disappointed not to receive new information on the company's next VR device.

iDigitalTimes reported that the PlayStation VR was not mentioned or demonstrated by Sony President and CEO Kazuo Hirai. It only had a brief appearance in the videos Hirai presented. Although there were PlayStation VR demo units installed at booths, no additional information was disclosed to the gaming public.

Sony stated that the PlayStation VR is still scheduled for a 2016 release; however, there is no exact date yet. Rumors suggest that Sony could release the PlayStation VR sometime before July after the launch of its competitors Oculus Rift and Samsung VR.

Regarding price, PlayStation CEO Andrew House said that the Sony PlayStation VR will be "priced as a new gaming platform". The device could have a price tag close to the PlayStation 4's $399 launch price, reported IBN Live.

As previous reports and leaks showed, Sony PlayStation VR will work together with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation camera. It will have multiplayer gaming support and "360-degree sphere for visual and audio components".

'Gran Turismo Sport', Sony's flagship racing video game, will be available in the PlayStation VR. Other popular game titles slated for the Sony PlayStation VR are 'Ace Combat 7', 'Rez Infinite', 'Assassin's Creed', and 'Eagle Flight'.

The Sony PlayStation VR will face competition in the virtual reality market when it is released. It was reported that the PlayStation VR's 1920 x 1080 pixel display resolution will have a 25% faster screen refresh rate than the Rift and Vive's 2160 x 1200 resolution.

International Business Times reported that 2016 will be the year the virtual reality market will thrive. Jens Christensen, CEO of a virtual reality company called Jaunt, said that it 2016 is just the start. "This is the beginning of an explosion of content," added Mike Rothenberg of Rothenberg Ventures. "This is the first inning. Everything else has just been warmup."

The virtual reality market is focusing on creating content and getting consumers to experience 3D experiences through VR headsets. Market-watcher Cris Miranda said that virtual reality will introduce familiar concepts to gamers and show them how to do it better.
