The 34-year-old self-confessed serial killer was found dead in his prison cell in an Alaskan jail on Sunday. Anchorage law enforcement officials said Israel Keyes committed suicide.
Police have not released any details about his death, but the Alaska State Troopers told the Huffington Post that since Keys was in solitary confinement, no foul play is suspected.
Keyes confessed to the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig in February. He was later convicted of other murders, including a Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier in 2011. Police say he killed five more people, who remain unnamed and was a prime suspect in other murders as well.
Kevin Feldis, Assistant U.S. Attorney said, "He did tell us that he had killed other people and that there were bodies of up to four other people in Washington state, as well as a body disposed of in New York state," as reported by the Huffington Post.
He was also charged with robbery, police say some of his crimes date back to 1998. He was due in court in March 2013 on federal charges and possibly faced the death penalty.
Keyes was a carpenter, who moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 2007. Prior to that he also served in the U.S. army and was stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington State.
Among those Keyes murdered, Koenig's was the only body discovered, but police say they will continue to investigate in the other murders alleged against Keys.
