Slovenia Says No to Same-Sex Marriage in a Referendum; Bill discarded in a public vote

By

Almost two-thirds of the Slovenian voters rejected the same-sex marriage in a referendum. They believe that marriage is still a union between two heterosexual adults.

In March of this year, the Slovenian Parliament passed a law about marriage equality. However, opponents and mostly conservatives were readily on the lookout to challenge it. The conservative civil group has initiated a petition against the law and appealed to have a public vote to the court.

More than 63% of voters discarded the bill about the same-sex marriage as well as the prohibition of same-sex couples to adopt children, making the Parliament's stand defeated. Thus, this decision was seen as a triumph for conservatives who were supported by the Catholic Church group that has about two million people.

The final decision clearly shows the cultural split in the European Union. The Western member states are in favor of granting rights to same-sex couples, while the newer Eastern and Central member states are otherwise.

As a result, the United Left party was, of course, not happy with the decision. Some of the members have expressed their disappointment and sadness about the matter. United Left MP Violeta Tomic said that it is not over yet and the law will be accepted sooner or later. Nonetheless, they could no longer change the court's decision for now.

Furthermore, Slovenia has been considered to be one of the more liberal former communist countries. But, gay rights or same-sex marriage is still a debatable issue in the country.

All in all, same-sex marriage is not yet accepted by everybody. There may be some countries that allow it already, but everyone should know that it is not for all. Those conservative nations will certainly stick to the traditional practices and embrace conventional beliefs. Hence, it is all about respecting one another all the time.
