James Holmes Court Hearing: Prosecutors Press Additional Charges Against Alleged Aurora Movie Theater Shooter

By

Prosecutors have added 14 additional charges against James Egan Holmes, alleged Colorado movie theater shooter. Prosecutors have also amended five of the other charges pitted against him in a Thursday hearing. Holmes has already been charged with 12 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.

Also on Thursday, Defense attorney Daniel King has asked Judge William Sylvester to delay the preliminary hearing for the case, which was scheduled for November 13.

According to Tamara Brady, of Holmes' lawyers, the team requires more time to prepare for the case. Brady says that the defense has over 19,000 pages of evidence and that "We have not begun to understand the nature and depth of Mr. Holmes' mental illness," as reported by CBS News.

Prosecutors on the other hand said that they would be ready for the hearing next month and would need to consult with the families of the victims before they agree to a delay.

Judge Sylvester has scheduled a court hearing to decide the matter on October 25. He plans on delaying the hearing till January 7 of next year.

Both Defense and Prosecutors requested that media coverage of the case be checked i.e. both parties want as little information as possible conveyed to the media regarding the case.

Currently, the alleged shooter Holmes is being held in a detention facility of Arapahoe County in solitary confinement. Eighteenth Judicial District Attorney Carol Chambers told News Day that she is considering pursuing the death penalty, but only after consulting with the victims and their families.

On July 20, at a midnight screening of the cult-inducing Dark Knight Rises film at a movie house in Aurora, Colorado, Holmes, opened fire killing 12 people and injuring 59 others. He was arrested that morning and placed in custody.
