eBay Auctions Einstein’s Letter for $3 Million: Auction for “God Letter” to Erik Gutkind Starts Tuesday (See Letter)

By

The large online market eBay will be auctioning the letter of legendary physicist Albert Einstein between October 8 to October 18 at a starting bid of $3 million.

The letter was written by Einstein on January 3, 1954 to a philosopher by the name of Erik Gutkind in response to his book "Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt."

The letter is called the "God Letter" since Einstein describes God as a manifestation of human's weakness to cope with the inexplicable and infinite.

An excerpt from the letter reads as follows:

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this. These subtilised interpretations are highly manifold according to their nature and have almost nothing to do with the original text. For me the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them."

The letter was purchased from Bloomsbury Auction in London in 2008 for $404,000 and maintains the original envelope, stamp and postmark from when it was sent in 1954. The letter has been preserved in a temperature controlled vault according to Reuters.

The seller remains unnamed, but Eric Gazin, president of Auction Cause which is handling the bid, said that he expects the letter to fetch between $6-$9 million.
