Jerry Sandusky: What We Know and What to Expect From Tuesday’s Sentencing of Ex-Penn State University Assistant Football Coach in Child-Sex Scandal?

By

After being convicted in May on 45 out of 48 counts of child abuse and molestation, Jerry Sandusky will finally receive his sentencing on Tuesday, October 9.

There are few things that we can expect from the sentencing:

1)Sandusky Gets Life in Prison: There is a general consensus that the 68-year-old is likely to receive life in prison. Many legal analysts have said that Sandusky could get up to 400 years in prison without parole. Even his attorney, Joe Amendola believes that his client is likely to get the lifetime sentence. Amendola told the Washington Post, "Either he gets a new trial or he's in (prison) for the rest of his life."

2)Sandusky Might Get a Lesser Sentence of 10 Years: While legal analysts say that Sandusky will get life in prison, NBC's Wes Oliver says that he could receive as less as ten year in prison.According to the article, among the 45 criminal counts, six have a minimum sentence of ten years, never the less if the judge lets him serve the 60 years concurrently, he could be serving much less.

3) Victim 5 and Other Victims to Speak in Court: A recent report suggests that Victim 5, whose shower testimony played a crucial role in getting the former assistant football coach convicted, will speak at the sentencing. Tom Kline, the attorney of victim 5 (whose identity remains undisclosed), confirmed that the now 23-year-old victim will speak in court at the sentencing. Victim 5 testified that he first met the assistant coach when he was in the fifth grade; he told the court that Sandusky had molested him in a shower. It is not certain whether the remaining seven victims will also address the court.

4) Sandusky to Speak in Court for the First Time: According to Amendola, the convicted pedophile will take the stand and reiterate his innocence. Sandusky did not testify during his trial, but says he will speak to the court on his sentencing in hopes of getting a lesser prison sentence. Sandusky maintains that he did molest or rape any of the boys and claims that he was wrongfully convicted.

5) Judge John Cleland Decides if Sandusky is a Violent Predator: Pennsylvania judge John Cleland will also decide whether Sandusky should be categorized as a violent sexual predator, a request made by state prosecutor. If the 68 year old receives the following classification, he will get a lifetime sentence in prison.

6)Sandusky to Appeal: Sandusky and his legal team still maintain his innocence and claim that he was wrongfully convicted. Amendola already told the Wall Street Journal that he has started preparations for appealing the case, once his client receives his sentence.

In May, a jury of seven women and five men found the 68 year-old guilty of 45 out of the 48 counts against him for sexual abuse of ten young boys over a span of 15 years. Sandusky is currently in Centre County prison.
