Superstar pop-icon Madonna released a statement Tuesday clarifying the comments she made about President Obama at a concert as a part of the MDNA tour in the Verizon Center in Washington on Monday, where she referred to Obama as a "black Muslim."
The video of her comments were posted on YouTube and spurred a thread of criticism, many of them accusing Madonna of wrongly calling Obama a Muslim. In the statement Madonna says that she was being "ironic" and that "Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim - though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?" as reported by Reuters.
The 54-year-old went on to add, "The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don't care what religion Obama is - nor should anyone else in America," as reported by Reuters.
A Madonna concert is never complete without some commentary on either a social or political event, last time the singer was outspoken about her support for members the female Russian punk-band, Pussy Riot, who were convicted and imprisoned for hooliganism, this time Madonna delivered a political speech in support for the 2012 democratic presidential nominee Obama.
On stage Madonna was videotaped saying, "Now, it's so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House ... we have a black Muslim in the White House - that is some amazing (bleep) ... it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man," as the YouTube video.
A few weeks ago, at another concert Madonna ripped her shirt to reveal Obama's name inked on her lower back. Madonna has been one of the many Hollywood celebrities to support Obama in 2008 and continue to garner support for the up-coming November elections.
