Three and half year old deaf Hunter Spanjer was asked by his Grand Island Preschool to change the sign of his name, which according to the school appears like he's signing a weapon.
Hunter crosses his index and forefinger and then moves his hand up and down; according to the school it violates a law that prohibits anything that resembles a weapon in the school premises.
The grandmother of Hunter told the local channel, "Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous...This is not threatening in any way."
Brian Spanjer, Hunter's father told Yahoo News, "It's a symbol. It's an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E." as reported by Yahoo News.
But in a statement released Tuesday the school through its Communications Coordinator Jack Sheard said, "The sign language techniques taught in the school district are consistent with the standards of the Nebraska Department of Education and ASL [American Sign Language]...It goes on to say, "Grand Island Public Schools is not requiring any current student with a hearing impairment to change his or her sign language name," as reported by 1011 Now.
According to reports the school received many angry calls and threats since the story broke out, which have forced the school to retract their previous request.
The parents of the deaf preschooler that they already informed lawyers at the National Association of the Deaf to take on the case, if the school pursued it further.
