Tom Cruise's lawyer is threatening to sue the National Enquirer for slander and releasing false accusations about his recent divorce with actress Katie Holmes. The publication apparently called the 50-year-old superstar a "monster" who subjected Holmes to "abuse" during her five year marriage to him.
Bert Field, Cruise's lawyer, sent a letter to the publication stating, "As you were notified in advance, your current issue of the National Enquirer makes numerous false and defamatory assertations about our client Tom Cruise..." as disclosed by CBS News, Field goes on to say, "Your cover announces, as a fact, that 'THE REAL TOM CRUISE IS A MONSTER.' Mr. Cruise is certainly not a 'monster.' He is a caring father, a hardworking actor and, above all, an honest, decent man...Contrary to your blaring headlines, Mr. Cruise has not engaged in any 'abuse' or 'humiliation' of Katie Holmes. Nor has he ever subjected her to any 'punishments,'" he added. "Ms. Holmes did not lead a 'tortured life' with Mr. Cruise. Despite their divorce, their relationship was generally a loving one."
The letter demands a retraction with the same amount of attention and prominence as the original article.
Last week, Cruise and Holmes reportedly reached a divorce settlement on amicable terms. No details of the agreement were divulged as both parties wanted to keep matters as private as possible.
Last month 33-year-old Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in a New York Court seeking sole custody of their six year old daughter Suri. The couple had been married for five years.
The couple, who is reported to have a pre-nuptial agreement, is said to be worth $275 million, most of which is earned by Cruise. According to Good Morning America, last year Cruise made around $75 million, while Holmes only $25 million in comparison.
