On Wednesday an MTA officer killed the man who stabbed him in the left eye at the Sutphin Blvd. Long Island Railroad station in Jamaica, Queens.
At 9.30 am on the 4th of july holiday, John Barnett was stabbed in the eye by Edgar Owens, who "made a bee-line for him (Barnett)," as reported by the Daily News.
Officer Barnet, an 11-year-veteran, was rushed to the Jamaica Hospital. According to a statement released by the MTA, his injuries are not fatal and he is currently undergoing surgery.
The suspect, Edgar Owens, who was also rushed to the same hospital after being shot by the officer whom he just stabbed, was declared dead on the spot.
A witness, Steve Simo, 28, told the Daily News that he heard the gun shots while waiting for the train, "I thought it was a tire because you never expect to really hear a gunshot...I heard one shot and then after that you heard two more -- bang, bang."
The incident did not impact on any of the workings of the train station, where trains continued to run as per schedule.
The reasons for the altercation are still undetermined. The police say that investigation is on going.
