NEW YORK. - In an interview on Tuesday with CBS's "Good Morning America" Rielle Hunter, the controversial mistress of former senator John Edwards who was recently acquitted of finance campaign crimes, announced the her and Edwards were no longer a couple.
"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple...We decided together to end it," Hunter said on the show.
Hunter appeared on the show to promote her book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," which goes on shelves Tuesday.
In the book, Hunter talks about her affair with the then presidential candidate, who was married at the time and reports of his wife's cancer battle had erupted as his affair with Hunter was revealed. The scandal was quick to grab huge media attention. And then, it was soon discovered that the Edwards team used campaign finances to hide Hunter, who was pregnant with his child at the time, from the media. Soon the Justice Department charged Edwards with campaign finance fraud.
Hunter briefly addressed her perspective of the scandal and also talked about Edwards' fear of being sent to jail.
Earlier this month, prosecutors announced that they dropped all federal charges for campaign finance fraud against the former senator after a jury acquitted him for the same charges last month. The former presidential candidate had been indicted in October for using campaign funds of more than $1 million to hide his then pregnant mistress, Hunter, from the media and public eye during his 2008 presidential campaign.
Hunter and Edwards have a four year old daughter named Quinn.
